On Friday, 22nd January, the sculpture commemorating Wimbledon FC’s history during the many years when we played at Plough Lane will be formally unveiled.
The sculpture was a condition of planning permission for the flats which have now been built on the site, and is being paid for by Barratt.
Much of the work in planning the sculpture has been carried out by Wimbledon College of Art, now part of the University of the Arts, London. WISA provided a lot of the initial input, and the sculptor has latterly spent a great deal of time talking to Wimbledon fans, discussing ideas, and presenting proposals. We all appreciate his sensitivity in trying to create something which we can be proud of and which represents our history as a football club.
The sculpture is already in place (though covered up) at the corner of Plough Lane and Durnsford Road. It is not representational (i.e. not a statue) as we felt the club’s identity could not and should not be expressed within one individual.
We know it can never replace what we had at Plough Lane, but we hope that it will become a local landmark strengthening our identity within the community.
The Mayor of Merton will be present at the ceremony, as well as some former players. The proceedings will commence at 12 noon, and are expected to finish at 1 p.m. There are invitations for ten Dons fans to attend, with names to be drawn at random next week. All fans are welcome to put in their names -- you don’t have to be a WISA member.
To enter in the draw, simply e-mail your name, postal address and telephone number to secretary@wisa.org.uk by 6 p.m. next Tuesday, 12th January, labelling your e-mail “Plough Lane draw”. We will contact those who are successful by e-mail, and ensure an invitation is sent by post or e-mail.
