WISA is pleased to announce that it has bought a unique collection of Wimbledon memorabilia formerly belonging to Harry Stannard, one of our outstanding players.
The Harry Stannard Archive consists of 27 items, the many medals including the runners-up gold medal for the FA Amateur Cup 1946-47, a winners gold medal for the Surrey Senior Cup 1939-40, and the Isthmian League winners' Trophy 1958-59. There is also his England Amateur cap 1949-50, his Surrey cricket cap, and his long-term service shield Wimbledon FC 1935-85.
The Archive also includes a Jim Mercer cartoon of Harry's last game for Wimbledon in 1954, photographs of Harry and newspaper cuttings including a report of a game against the Sing Tao Chinese team in which Harry scored twice.
The Archive was bought from a private collection for £1,500.
As we have only recently bought the collection, we are currently making plans or a home for it. However, whilst WISA will retain ownership on behalf of all who love Wimbledon and its history, we will be approaching the Club, Wimbledon Museum and other interested bodies to find a suitable home where the Archive can be displayed.
WISA would like to thank Terry Parker for all of his hard work in acting on behalf of WISA, with this important purchase.
