WISA Statement On The History & Honours of Wimbledon FC

The Wimbledon Independent Supporters Association (WISA) notes this morning’s press speculation surrounding Milton Keynes Dons FC’s decision to erect a statue of former Wimbledon hero, Vinnie Jones at their new stadium in Denbeigh.

WISA believes that all of Wimbledon FC's history and heritage rightfully belongs to AFC Wimbledon and/or the community of Wimbledon.

Simon Wheeler, WISA chair said “Milton Keynes Dons FC are the first franchise in English league football. The vast majority of football fans regard them as a new club which stole a league place and the history and honours of another community's club”.

WISA has written to Mr Peter Winkelman on numerous occasions to request a meeting, to be facilitated by the FA and to be held under Chatham House rules, to discuss the return of the history and honours of Wimbledon FC to their rightful owners.

WISA also believes that Milton Keynes Dons FC relinquished the right to call itself a continuation of Wimbledon FC, following the decision by an FA Approved Commission on the 28th May 2002, to allow Wimbledon FC to be franchised out to Milton Keynes. WISA believes that Milton Keynes Dons FC should only be allowed to make references to events that have occurred after the FA Commission's decision date.

Wheeler said: “Wimbledon FC was relocated to Milton Keynes without the consent of genuine Wimbledon supporters. Peter Winkelman actions in erasing the club’s identity, by changing its crest, colours and above all its name and location, firmly demonstrates that he has never had any respect for the history of Wimbledon FC”.

WISA would like to remind all football supporters, particularly those supporting League One Clubs, that they can demonstrate their views on the dangers of franchising by boycotting the home games of MK Dons in Milton Keynes.
