The Ground Poll
If there is one thing Wimbledon fans know, it’s that moving
ground defines the future of the club. With talk of signing a
three year deal to share with Tooting and Mitcham, some supporters
think the future of Wimbledon is being decided all over again.
Nothing has been signed yet, and whilst I have no doubt the Wimbledon
Board will put the decision to the owners of the club –
the members of the Dons Trust – it’s time to get over
the honeymoon period and think about running this club for the
future.
Wimbledon supporters have never been afraid of voicing their
views, and already the pros and cons are being discussed. In the
first of a series of polls concerning the future of our club,
we ask this week what you think about the move.
Remember that there is an AFC Wimbledon meeting taking place
prior to the prior to the Goldaming & Guildford game at Kingsmeadow.
Doors open at 11:45am and the meeting will start at 12 noon sharp,
ending at 2pm. The directors of AFC Wimbledon will be there, to
talk about what's happening at the club and to answer any questions
supporters might have.
Some of the comments [paraphrased] made by owners of our club
include.........
“I can’t wait to move to T&M – finally
Back To Merton”
“It’s a great ground – great facilities
– and we will have loads of office space”
“A three year deal will finally give us some stability”
“Having our own bar – at last”
“The financial benefits will be enormous – there
is talk of a bar, disco, office space, shop etc.”
"It's brand new - you can still smell the paint!"
"It's a real football stadium - no layout problems,
less fan congestion"
and............
“Yes, we’ll be back in Merton – but it’s
not our ground, and I fear Merton Council will leave us there”
“Not a bad idea as long as we don’t spend any
of our money upgrading the stadium – it’s our money,
and we need it for our own stadium”
“Why can’t we stay at Ks?”
“The last time we moved grounds [to Selhurst] –
we ended up staying there”
“Of course T&M want us to move there – it’s
a money spinner – I don’t trust them”
“The Trust better have a long term plan – otherwise
there will be hell to pay”
“T&M are doing okay – but the Ks are in trouble
– I think we owe to football to help clubs that need our
help”
